Curated by Jamiel Devernay-Laurence, Ballet Nights: New Voices transformed Ministry of Sound, into a captivating space for contemporary ballet. The event showcased a fusion of sophisticated dance and vibrant nightlife, offering a unique experience for attendees.

Designed to challenge traditional perceptions of dance venues, Ministry of Sound, typically associated with electronic music and nightlife, provided an unexpected yet dynamic backdrop for showcasing the contemporary ballet performances.

The event unfolded across two of the main spaces within Ministry of Sound. The 103 served as an intimate setting for initial performances. Here, dancers utilised multiple levels, including a stage positioned in front of the central DJ booth as well as atop the bar and walkway above. Lighting enhanced the atmosphere, allowing for up-close interactions between performers and the audience.

Later, acts moved through to The Box, with a larger stage setup. The space provided a contrast in performances, with each act utilising sound and lighting to amplify their choreography. Speaker stacks offered various vantage points, enhancing the immersive nature of the performances.

The event showcased creativity and innovation by choosing a non-traditional venue and seamlessly blended contemporary ballet with club culture. While predominantly attracting a youthful audience, the event pleasantly surprised older attendees who appreciated the intimate setting that allowed them to experience the performances up close.

Following the performances, the event transitioned smoothly into a DJ set by one of the dancers.

Looking forward, organisers are enthusiastic about hosting another iteration later this year. They plan to enhance the movement and fluidity throughout the event, aiming to strengthen engagement with the dance experience. Ballet Nights at Ministry of Sound not only pushed boundaries but also set a new standard for immersive and captivating dance events in unconventional settings. This success opens exciting possibilities for future productions, promising innovative and memorable experiences for audiences.

Sober Girl Society selected Ministry of Sound to host their inaugural sober festival and rave, capitalising on the venue’s reputation for dance music and vibrant events. The unique festival aimed to celebrate sobriety and self-confidence in a fun, engaging environment.

The festival, running from 10 am to 7 pm, featured a variety of activities designed to empower and entertain attendees. The team collaborated closely with Sober Girl Society to ensure that each aspect of the event was thoughtfully planned and executed, creating an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere.

The Box was transformed into an empowering dance workshop space, where guests could learn new moves and build confidence. It also hosted a breathwork workshop and panel talks focused on sobriety and self-confidence, offering valuable insights and inspiration to attendees.

The Lounge was converted into a ‘zen den’ and ‘pamper lounge,’ where festival guests could unwind and enjoy a selection of alcohol-free cocktails. This space provided a perfect setting for networking and relaxation.

The Courtyard was opened up and filled with chairs and bean bags, creating a relaxing area for attendees to rest between sessions. And in The Loft, guests could participate in beauty and spa treatments.

As the event drew to a close, The Box became the focal point for the rave portion of the festival. DJs Ashley James and Zoe took the stage, playing throwback hits, girl power anthems, and club classics. Guests showcased their dance moves learned during the earlier workshop, bringing the day to a joyful and energetic conclusion.

In March 2019, Wild at Heart Foundation invited guests to join them for an exclusive evening of fine art and fundraising, titled ‘One Night Only’. The unique event offered attendees the chance to purchase pieces by celebrated artists, to raise funds for their dog charity – ‘to compassionately reduce the world’s 600 million stray dog problems through a spaying and neutering initiative, global education programmes and re-homing.

The White Space at The Ministry provided the perfect space for the artwork to be displayed. Art exhibition rails were installed into the space and the in-house events team organised transportation and insurance of the artwork to maximise the donations for the charity. The space was adorned with floral arrangements that suited the style of the pieces, including a dog constructed out of flowers.

Moving through to the reception, guests were guided into The Bar & Garden where exclusive cocktails were served. Well-behaved dogs were welcomed into the venue, enjoying the treats and water bowls provided.
